It's something that I pondered over and over again while teaching American history. <br /><br />I wonder if you might find the work of D. G. Hart thought-provoking. His views are not really compatible with yours, but he would be a very fruitful interlocutor, as he takes "my kingdom is not of this world" almost as far as it can reasonably go.
